Not wanting a replay of the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup in which Costa Rica had three players ejected in a hotly contested match against Mexico, officials from the Costa Rican soccer federation (Fedefutbol) are up in arms over the appointment of U.S. referee Terry Vaughn for the upcoming World Cup qualifier on March 28 in Mexico City.

While Fedefutbol President Eduardo Li told AP that while his federation will not reject Vaughn’s selection, “we are going to send a memo detailing the previous history we have had with this official.”

Li went on to say, “whether it’s a coincidence or not, our national team is always affected by these decisions. We don’t want the referee to help us but we don’t want them to be detrimental to us either.”
