There is talk of yet another European club competition crowding an already full calendar of fixtures, as France Football magazine revealed in its most recent issue that the continent’s top pro teams “are ready to break away and form an elite, three-tiered “Super-Championship”, which would usurp the Champions League in importance,” writes Goal.com.
Replacing an earlier incarnation of top European teams known as the G14 that was looking to create its own exclusive competition, the 100-member strong European Club Association (ECA) is the current force behind the proposal “to help generate more wealth for the clubs in crisis.”
Acknowledging the proposal as a real possibility, UEFA president Michel Platini reminded, “UEFA is a democratic organization. We will listen to everyone and we will seek the view of all stakeholders. And then, when the time comes, it will be up to the executive committee to decide” on the project that would reshape the European soccer landscape as soon as 2012-13.
