Jorge Larrionda, the referee who sent off three players in the United States' group stage draw with Italy at the 2006 World Cup, will work the Confederations Cup in South Africa this June.

The Uruguayan, who had dismissed Italian Daniele De Rossi and Americans Pablo Mastroeni and Eddie Pope with 47 minutes played of the 1-1 draw with Italy, is among 10 referees appointed for the 16 games to be played from June 14-28 as a forerunner to next year's World Cup. The United States will face Italy in a group match on June 15 in the tournament.

The list of referees includes three from UEFA — England's Howard Webb, Massimo Busacca of Switzerland and Sweden's Martin Hansson — and two from South America — Larrionda and Carlos Amarilla of Paraguay. Matthew Breeze of Australia represents the Asian Confederation, Africa has Coffi Codjia of Benin, Michael Hester of New Zealand represents Oceania and Concacaf's referee is Carlos Batres of Guatemala. Another African referee, Eddy Maillet of the Seychelles, is there as a first reserve.
