[UEFA CUP] Germany’s Werder Bremen and Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk defeated domestic rivals on Thursday to advance to the final of the last edition of the UEFA Cup before the competition is converted to the Europa Cup.

Werder reversed a 1-0 deficit at home in the first leg, winning, 3-2, in Hamburg to advance to the final. Diego, Claudio Pizarro and Frank Baumann scored goals sandwiched between HSV tallies

Bankrolled by billionaire Rinat Akhmetov, Shakhtar Donetsk got goals from Brazilians Jadson and Ilsinho and a third Brazilian, Luiz Adriano, headed a ball off his own line to prevent a second Dynamo Kiev goal late in the game that would have changed the outcome of the series. Shakhtar won, 2-1, after tying the first leg in Kiev, 1-1.
