It’s been two years since Danny Szetela played in Major League Soccer with the Columbus Crew. After stints with Racing Santander in Spain’s La Liga, and Brescia Calcio in Italy’s Serie B, the midfielder will return to his home country to join D.C. United.

D.C. United acquired the 22-year-old through the allocation draft after FC Dallas decided to pass on the U.S. international. “We are pleased that Danny has decided to return to MLS and that he is now part of D.C. United,” said General Manager Dave Kasper in a statement. “He is a talented young player who now has some terrific international experience including two years playing in Italy and Spain, as well as all of his time at the U.S. Olympic, U-20 and U-17 national-team levels. Danny is very versatile and will compete for regular playing time in a number of spots on the field. We look forward to his future contributions to our club.”

Able to play both central and right midfield, Szetela’s all-action play could help ease the burden of Ben Olsen‘s persistent injury problems in the heart of midfield. The 5-foot-11 midfielder is not eligible to play for D.C. United until the receipt of his international transfer certificate arrives. He is not expected to play this weekend against the Colorado Rapids.
