Washed up soccer players everywhere should appreciate Phil Tuckett's new documentary, "The Golden Age," which documents a season of the Golden Age League in Corona Park, Queens, New York. The highly competitive league is made up of middle-aged players who were once stars in their homelands. Most are from Central and South America.
Their former glory just a memory, these players compete at a level never before documented, with "muscles creaking, hairlines receding and waistlines expanding," as the film's synopsis suggests. "During the week these men are window washers, traders, electricians, but the weekend is theirs. The game is slightly different but the passion remains." The film follows players and teams through a tumultuous season that includes betting rings, recruiting, boycotting and expulsion. The film premieres Sept. 20.
