Maren Meinert netted her seventh and eighth goals of the season and the Boston Breakers leapt atop the WUSA standings with a wild 3-1 victory Saturday at Washington.

San Jose's scoring troubles continued in a 2-0 home loss to New York.

Sunday's highlights:

Boston 3 Washington 1: Meinert took over the No. 1 spot among the WUSA's scoring leaders and the Breakers (5-3-2, 17 points) moved atop the WUSA standings in a match featuring a league-record three ejections.

Washington (5-2-1, 16 points) has played two fewer matches than Boston.

Meinert gave the Breakers a sixth-minute lead, finishing a cross from Stephanie Mugneret-Beghe after a Freedom giveaway in midfield. The German forward made it 2-0 in the 29th minute after beating goalkeeper Siri Mullinix to a contested ball.

Mary-Frances Monroe added an 82nd-minute goal after weaving through the Freedom defense.

Steffi Jones got her first WUSA goal for Washington four minutes into the second half from a Mia Hamm corner kick.

Boston's Angela Hucles and Washington's Skylar Little were sent off after a collision and heated aftermath in the 74th minute, and Freedom striker Abby Wambach was ejected in stoppage time after a violent foul on Heather Aldama.

Wambach will serve her automatic suspension on Wednesday, when the Freedom plays at Carolina, but she would have missed the match anyway while with the U.S. women in Salt Lake City preparing for their match next weekend against Ireland.

The big forward may be assessed an additional penalty after Mia Hamm twice had to restrain her from going after referee Tony Russo following the red card.

New York 2 San Jose 0: Margaret Tietjen scored a superb 40-yard free kick in the 63rd minute and Emily Janss added a goal 13 minutes later as the Power (4-5-0, 12 points) snapped a two-game losing streak before 6,002 at Spartan Stadium.

Saskia Webber, seeing her first action of the season, made four saves for the shutout. San Jose (4-5-0, 12 points) has scored a league-worst eight goals in nine games and has been shutout in successive games, extending its goalless streak to 209 minutes.

San Jose goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene, whose error last week enabled Dagny Mellgren to score in a 1-0 Boston victory, stood and watched Tietjen's blast — meant to be a cross — find the upper-right corner.

Janss tallied on a header from Tammy Pearman's left-wing cross.
