Dallas Roma FC made U.S. Open Cup history Tuesday night when it beat Chivas USA on penalty kicks.
Roma became the first USASA team to beat an MLS club in the annual cup competition.
Roma, which had upset Romario’s Miami FC in the previous round, prevailed against Chivas USA, 4-2, on penalties. Jesse Llamas was the hero, stopping two Chivas penalties in the shootout. Roma featured two former MLS players: Juan Sastoque (Dallas Burn 1996-97) and Dominic Schell (Columbus Crew 2000). Roma next faces the defending Open Cup champion Los Angeles Galaxy on Aug. 2.
The three other MLS clubs playing on Tuesday in the third round all won. Real Salt Lake needed an overtime goal from Andy Williams to beat the USL-1’s Virginia Beach Mariners, 2-1. Scott Sealy‘s goal in stoppage time gave the Kansas City Wizards a 2-1 win over the PDL’s Des Moines Menace. The Columbus Crew cruised past the PDL’s Michigan Bucks, 4-1.
