Winners:
Fulham's American striker BRIAN McBRIDE scored his club-leading ninth goal of the English Premier League season, but Manchester United won, 4-2.
In the English second tier, 21-year-old American defender FRANK SIMEK, making his 31st straight start for Sheffield Wednesday, scored his first pro goal — the gamewinner in a 1-0 victory against fellow relegation candidate Millwall, for which 21-year-old American defender Zak Whitbreak played the full 90. Eddie Lewis set up both goals in Leeds' 2-0 win over Queens Park Rangers. And Bobby Convey assisted as runaway leader Reading downed Crewe Alexandra, 4-3, to extend its league unbeaten run to 31 games.
Host EGYPT kept its hopes alive to become the first team to win five African Nations Cup titles by reaching the semifinals with a 4-1 quarterfinal win over the Democratic Republic of Congo. Egypt faces Senegal, a 3-2 winner over Guinea. The Ivory Coast is the only one of five African 2006 World Cup qualifiers to reach the final four, having downed Cameroon on penalty kicks. The Ivory Coast faces Nigeria, which beat defending champ Tunisia, also on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie.
Losers:
BORUSSIA MOENCHENGLADBACH, with American Kasey Keller in goal, fell, 2-0, to Wolfsburg and slipped to eighth place in the Bundesliga, three spots below the UEFA Cup zone. Gladbach has won only one of its last nine games, a run that included four ties.
BARCELONA's 14-game winning streak in Spain's La Liga came to an end with a 3-1 loss at home to Atletico Madrid, ending the Catalan club's quest to match a record 15-game winning streak set by Real Madrid during the 1960-61 season. Barcelona, which was eliminated from the Spanish Cup in the midweek, still has a nine-point lead on second-place Valencia and a 10-point lead over third-place Real Madrid. Barcelona's only other league loss this season also came against Atletico Madrid.
