Dean Shiels has scored eight goals in 58 first-team games for his current club Hibernian, spent one season with Arsenal and for four years was a youth player at Manchester United – without letting teammates or coaches know he was blind in one eye.

The 21-year-old Northern Irishman lost sight in his right eye in an accident with a wallpaper scraper when he was 8 years old.

Earlier this year he revealed the secret after undergoing surgery to remove the bad eye, which was linked to headaches he had been suffering from.

''It's funny, I have never been conscious of my eye,'' Shiels told the Scottish Sun. ''I know that sounds silly but I always just got on with it as if I had two good eyes. I certainly didn't think about it whenever I played football. Only my closest family really knew about it.''
