Cristiano Ronaldo will not be returning to Manchester United next season, Daniel Taylor of the Guardian reports. In fact, the young Portuguese winger has been plotting his exit from Old Trafford for the last 10 months. United announced yesterday that Ronaldo would not be leaving under any circumstances. Sir Alex Ferguson says Ronaldo confirmed his interest in leaving United for Real Madrid a week before the match with England, and is now using the reaction to Wayne Rooney’s sending off as an excuse to leave. Ronaldo’s teammates are also said to be bemused by his claims that he’s lost the support of the team and the club’s owners, the Glazer family, after the underhanded tactics he showed during the World Cup. While Chelsea has managed to sign Andriy Shevchenko, Michael Ballack, and Salomon Kalou, United has failed to secure the futures of its stars and has yet to add any signings so far this summer. Ronaldo, the Guardian points out, would be the first United player to leave in the Ferguson era because the club no longer matches his ambitions. He remains coy about his future. “There is still nothing concrete, but I believe the issue will be resolved before the end of the week,” Ronaldo said yesterday.
