The U.S. under-14 national team, coached by Seton Hall coach Manfred Schellscheidt, will have two split squads represented at the U.S. Youth Soccer ODP Thanksgiving Interregional Nov. 24-28 in Austin, Texas.
The youngest player on the U-14 team by more than a year is 11-year-old striker Charles Renken. He was born in Zambia and adopted by an American family at the age of 9. The sixth-grader resides in Edwardsville, Ill., and plays for St. Louis club Scott Gallagher.
Another selection is 13-year-old forward Joseph-Claude Gyau, a third-generation player competing at the national team level. Gyau's father, Phil Gyau, played six times for the USA and played in Belgium. Joseph-Claude's grandfather, Nana Gyau, starred in the NASL and played for Ghana. Joseph-Claude plays for the Potomac (Md.) Fusion.
The U.S. Youth Soccer ODP Boys Thanksgiving Interregional will represent teams in the 1989, 1991 and 1992 age groups, including the U.S. U-17 national team and two teams (Blue and Grey) from the U.S. U-14s. In addition, a team from the host Lone Star Soccer Club of Austin, Texas, will be represented in the U-16 age group.
