The USAÆs Gold Cup title defense came to an end with a Brazilian golden goal from the penalty spot in overtime on Wednesday in Miami in the semifinals.

The penalty kick was called for a Cory Gibbs handball that kept DiegoÆs shot out of the goal. DiegoÆs shot came after keeper Kasey Keller blocked an attempt from Kaka, who retrieved his rebound and passed to Diego. That Diego was offside — Gibbs being the only player between Diego and the goal when Diego received the pass, because Keller had moved past Diego — wasnÆt noticed by the officials.

Diego converted the penalty shot, shooting down the middle as Keller dived right.

Earlier in the game, Brazil had a goal called back on a questionable offside call a minute before Carlos Bocanegra put the Americans up, 1-0. Bocanegra headed home from 8 yards off a Claudio Reyna free kick from the flank.

The Americans held the lead until an 89th minute equalizer set up by Ewerthon, who entered the game three minutes earler. Ewerthon, after evading Gibbs with a sharp cutback, had his shot deflected by Keller into KakaÆs path. Kaka finished into an open net.

''We ran out of gas,'' U.S. coach Bruce Arena said. ''Give Brazil credit, they are an excellent team with outstanding attacking players. But I give my team credit as well as we gave everything we had and just fell short.''

The USA will face the loser of tomorrowÆs Mexico-Costa Rica semifinal in the third-place game Saturday Miami (8 pm ET, live on Galavision).
