U.S. women's national team coach April Heinrichs included New York Power midfielder Shannon Boxx and San Diego Spirit goalkeeper Jenni Branam in her 29-player roster for four-day training camp in Chula Vista, Calif., that begins Thursday.
Boxx, coming off an extraordinary season with the Power, hasn't been capped. Branam, a rookie who played superbly with the Spirit, made all five of her international appearances in 2000.
Heinrichs, in preparation for the Sept. 20-Oct. 12 Women's World Cup, is expected to announce her 20-woman tournament roster following the training camp at the ARCO Olympic Training Center near San Diego.
The camp will run concurrently with activities leading up to Sunday's Founders Cup III, the WUSA championship match, at the University of San Diego's Torero Stadium.
Heinrichs included on her camp roster six players from WUSA finalists Atlanta and Washington, although they will not take part in national team activities during the week. On the roster are Washington forwards Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach and goalkeeper Siri Mullinix, and Atlanta goalkeeper Briana Scurry, defender Kylie Bivens and forward Cindy Parlow.
San Diego forward Shannon MacMillan and University of North Carolina forward Heather O'Reilly, both seeking to return from injuries in time for the World Cup, also have been called into camp, although neither will participate fully. Heinrichs has postponed her final roster decision while waiting to see if MacMillan and O'Reilly can come back in time for the tournament. She will use the camp to gauge their progress.
MacMillan is trying to return from a torn anterior cruciate ligament sustained in mid-May. O'Reilly is recovering from a broken leg suffered in mid-June and subsequent surgery to repair ankle ligaments.
Philadelphia defender Heather Mitts and Boston midfielder Devvyn Hawkins return to the national team after missing recent camps with injuries.
