Lawrence University midfielder Kwabena (Kobby) Buanya, a 21-year-old sophomore from Accra, Ghana, died Sept. 8 during a supervised team aquatic practice.

''This is a tragic incident that has profoundly shaken the campus community,'' said Lawrence University dean of students Nancy Truesdell on the Appleton, Wis., university's Web site. ''In addition to his participation in athletics, Kobby was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Lawrence International, and his passing is a very personal loss for many at Lawrence. Our hearts go out to Kobby's family and friends.''

''They kind of lost track of him and at some point noticed he wasn't with them,'' Appleton Police Lt. Rick Nilson told the Appleton Post.

Lawrence University is a Division III school.

Aquatic practice or aqua aerobics has become an increasingly popular part of soccer teams' training. In England, Cheslea manager Jose Mourinho began using the method this season to improve balance and coordination.
