Defending NCAA Division I champion Portland exited this year's tournament on penalty kicks, falling to archrival Santa Clara following a 0-0 draw in a third-round clash Sunday on the Pilots' Merlo Field.
The rematch of last year's title game, a game worthy of the final four, set up another — with the No. 3-ranked Broncos (14-3-6) heading to No. 1 North Carolina (24-0-0) for next Friday's quarterfinals. Santa Clara beat the Tar Heels in the 2001 final and last year's semifinals.
Florida State (16-7-1) also reached the elite eight for the first time, with a dramatic overtime victory at West Virginia, and Connecticut (13-5-3) destroyed visiting Michigan to fill out the quarterfinal field. The Seminoles visit Florida (19-3-2) on Friday, and UConn meets Brigham Young (14-5-3) at a site and on a date to be determined Monday.
The other quarterfinal, slated for Friday, has UCLA (19-1-3) home against Penn State (19-3-2).
In Sunday's action:
Portland 0 Santa Clara 0: The Broncos reached the quarterfinals for the ninth successive year, outfiring the Pilots, 4-2, in a shootout in a battle between the third- and fourth-ranked squads.
Santa Clara took a quick 3-0 lead as Leslie Osborne, Veronica Zepeda and Kristi Candau converted their shots and goalkeeper Julie Ryder saved the attempts by Kristen Rogers and Lisa Sari. Kari Evans pulled Portland (18-3-2) within two, and Pilot goalkeeper Cori Alexander stopped Jessica Ballweg's spot kick. Colleen Salisbury converted to make it 3-2, and Tina Estrada followed with a shot to the lower left to clinch the win.
Portland is one of two Division I teams, with North Carolina, that is unbeaten in regulation. All three Pilots losses, including a 2-1 decision Nov. 2 at Santa Clara, came in overtime.
Santa Clara had the best of the first half and Portland the better of the second half, and both teams hit right posts. Santa Clara's Veronica Zepeda struck the inside of the post in the 27th minute, and Portland's Angie Woznuk hit the same post in the 63rd.
Florida State 3 West Virginia 2: Leah Gallegos' goal just 22 seconds before a penalty-kick shootout lifted the Seminoles past the Mountaineers (17-4-2) at Morgantown, W.Va.
Gallegos' 18th goal of the season was her second overtime strike in as many matches.
Kelly Rowland, with a header from a flicked-on corner kick, gave Florida State a 14th-minute lead, and Katie Beal made it 2-0 eight minutes later, converting a penalty after Lisa Zanti took Gallegos down.
West Virginia rallied to tie with goals early and late in the second half. Zanti knocked home a loose ball following Lisa Stoia's free kick in the 47th minute, and Leslie Barden's third NCAA tournament goal, from a Ashley Weimer pass, made it 2-2 in the 88th.
Gallegos netted her 110th-minute goal from a Jez Ratleff feed off a Beal long ball.
Connecticut 5 Michigan 0: The Huskies romped into the quarterfinals for the 10th time in 11 years as Kristen Graczyk scored two goals and assisted two more.
Brittany Barakat fired UConn ahead in the fourth minute from Jessica Gjertsen's pass, and Nikki Cross doubled the advantage in the 26th minute. Jennifer Sullivan added a 70th-minute goal, and Graczyk tallied in the 78th and 82nd minutes.
Graczyk has four goals and three assists in the Huskies' three NCAA games. She's scored eight career NCAA goals.
Michigan (11-8-6) reached the third round after upsetting second-seeded Notre Dame.
Division II: Franklin Pierce (21-2-0) and UC San Diego (17-2-1), both longtime powerhouses, advanced to a semifinal meeting Dec. 4 in Virginia Beach, Va., with close victories.
Franklin Pierce reached its 12th successive final four with a 2-1 victory over Adelphi. Sonya Hughes and Meghan Welcome, with the 72nd-minute winner, scored for the Ravens, who won their fifth D2 title five years ago.
UC San Diego is seeking its third D2 title in four years after edging top-ranked Metro State, 3-2. Kristin Jones scored twice for the Tritons, quickly answering Metro State goals with headers in the 58th and 64th minutes, the latter just 70 seconds after Meisha Pyke's header pulled the Roadrunners even, 2-2. UCSD won three of four D3 titles before switching to D2 in 2000.
Division III: Brittny Boyd scored both goals as The College of New Jersey (18-4-0) upset No. 1 Wheaton, Mass., 2-0, to advanced to next weekend's final four. The Lions, seeking their fourth D3 title, meet Oneonta State in the semifinals. The site, dates and times will be announced Monday.
