Erin Baxter scored her first WUSA goal and the Carolina Courage extended their unbeaten streak and pulled within three points of first place with a 1-0 victory Saturday night at Boston.

San Diego snapped a two-game losing streak behind Aly Wagner and Julie Fleeting, beating visiting New York, 4-2, to move within a point off the top spot.

With two games remaining this weekend, Boston is on top with 17 points and four teams — Atlanta, Washington, San Diego and New York — have 16 points.

San Jose plays at Washington and Philadelphia plays at Atlanta on Sunday.

Saturday's highlights:

San Diego 4 New York 2: Fleeting scored her fifth and sixth goals of the season and Aly Wagner assisted two in her finest 90 minutes in the WUSA as the Spirit (4-3-4, 16 points) won an entertaining battle before 4,783 at Torero Stadium.

Fleeting, playing a WUSA game for the first time in front of her boyfriend, Scottish pro Colin Stewart, netted a pair of second-half goals and should have scored four as the Spirit feasted on Wagner's creativity in midfield.

Wagner, the first selection in February's WUSA draft, was credited with two assists but really assisted three — or four. Her 62nd-minute cross, a beauty from the left flank that dropped in after clearing Power defender Cheryl Salisbury, was headed in by Fleeting; Wagner also played the critical pass on Fleeting's stoppage-time goal.

Wagner also set up the Spirit's first goal, in the 11th minute, with a driving cross from the right that New York defender Jaclyn Raveia knocked in for an own goal.

Three minutes later, Wagner's free kick from the left was headed home by Fleeting, but referee Jesse Johnson ruled Fleeting had fouled the Power's Shannon Boxx on the play. Replays suggested Fleeting towered over Boxx and headed the cross cleanly.

Wagner's best pass of the afternoon, a ball from midfield that curled between two defenders and onto Fleeting's path in the Power box, went for naught; Fleeting fired wide.

Zhang Ouying scored her first goal of the season for San Diego, for a 2-1 lead in the 40th minute, from Fleeting's perfect dipping cross from the right.

Emily Janss and Anita Rapp scored fine goals from New York (5-6-1, 16 points), which lost forward Christie Welsh early in the match. She sustained an injury to her left leg in the sixth minute and was replaced after the Power played shorthanded for five minutes. Power coach Tom Sermanni said the extent of the injury would be clearer on Sunday or Monday.

The teams combined for 38 shots — 19 apiece — with 22 on target. Jaime Pagliarulo had several outstanding stops among her nine saves, and Justi Baumgardt and Tiffeny Milbrett hit the frame for the Power.

Carolina 1 Boston 0: Baxter headed home a Brooke O'Hanley corner kick in the 35th minute and Kristin Luckenbill notched her third successive shutout as the Courage (4-5-2, 16 points) knocked off the first-place Breakers (5-4-2, 17 points) before 6,256 in the rain at Nickerson Field.

Boston was down to 10 players, with Heather Aldama getting treatment off the field, when Baxter struck. The Breakers defender, who sustained a contusion to her lower back, was replaced a minute later.

The Courage, reigning WUSA champions, has rebounded after winning only one of its first seven matches.

Luckenbill, the league's Goalkeeper of the Year last season, made five saves to extend her shutout streak to 336 minutes.
