Abby Wambach netted her 10th and 11th goals of the year and Mia Hamm played a role in four tallies as the U.S. women's national team routed Brazil, 5-1, Saturday in its first domestic match of 2004.
Hamm ran roughshod over the Brazilians, assisting three first-half goals –Julie Foudy's 13th-minute opener and Wambach's scores in the 31st and 42nd minutes — and adding a late strike before 11,527 at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala.
''Soccer is one of those games that when you play well and do the simple things, it does look easy, but it's not,'' U.S. coach April Heinrichs said. ''There was no aspect of winning today that was easy. The effort they put in today was incredible.
''I am not sure there is a team out there in the world that has worked as hard as this team in the last four months, or the last three weeks. There are some things you can't control, like referees or bad bounces, but there are some things you can control, and we put it all together today.''
Christie Welsh, one of three ''guest'' players in the U.S. Olympic Residency camp, scored in the 86th minute and assisted Hamm a minute later. Welsh, who last played for the national team nearly two years earlier, was one of six second-half substitutions Heinrichs utilized.
Goalkeeper Kristin Luckenbill, another ''guest'' player in residency, made her international debut, coming on for starter Briana Scurry in the 66th minute. Welsh and Luckenbill are expected to be offered contracts for the remainder of residency.
Foudy scored from eight yards, her 44th international goal, after Brazilian goalkeeper Andreia batted away Hamm's cross. Wambach headed home Hamm's 45-yard free kick for the second goal, then finished from a Hamm feed just before halftime after Shannon Boxx put Hamm behind the Brazilian backline.
Wambach, who departed at halftime, has 25 international goals in 35 matches, 11 in the past 10 games.
Midfielder Marta, one of three Brazilians playing in the Swedish Damallsvenskan, scored in the 55th minute after a poor U.S. clearance.
Welsh ran onto a Cindy Parlow feed for her goal, then played a diagonal ball between two defenders for Hamm, who finished from near the penalty spot.
The match was a homecoming for defender Catherine Reddick, who grew up in Birmingham. She played 90 minutes in central defense and nearly scored twice from first-half corner kicks, sending one shot just wide and another at Andreia.
Both teams are preparing for the Aug. 11-26 women's soccer tournament at the Athens Olympics.
