The United States beat Ivory Coast, 2-0, in the round of 16 at the World Youth Championship Monday in Dubai.
The Americans move into the quarterfinals Friday against defending champion Argentina.
Justin Mapp and Eddie Johnson scored in the first half of the Americans. For Johnson, it was his third goal from the penalty spot in two games and fourth goal in four games, tying Taylor Twellman's record for most U.S. goals in a World Youth Championship.
The Ivorians had goalie Drissa Toure sent off for handling the ball outside the box in first half stoppage time. He had also been carded for the foul on Freddy Adu that led to Johnson's PK. Ivory Coast's other goalie, Daniel Yeboah, had been sent off in similar circumstances against Ireland in group play.
The win was only the second ever for the Americans in the knockout stage of the U-20 World Cup and only the third time they have reached the final eight.
The win came 20 years after the Americans beat Ivory Coast, 1-0, for its first win ever in the U-20 World Cup. The goal was scored by George Gelnovatch, the Virginia and U.S. U-18 coach.
It was a CONCACAF sweep over African teams. Canada upset Burkina Faso, 1-0, on University of Portland star Josh Simpson's goal.
In other games Monday, Argentina beat Egypt, 2-1, on Fernando Cavenaghi's golden goal, and Japan beat South Korea, 2-1.
