Men's soccer was spared at Western Michigan University, but four other programs were dropped.

WMU's governing board voted unanimously Friday to cut three men's track programs and women's synchronized skating, beginning in the 2004-05 school year. The move will save WMU about $535,000.

The Broncos advanced to the NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament for the first time in their history in 2003, but the men's soccer program was one of the sports in danger of being dropped.

WMU now has a minimum NCAA Division I-A total of 16 sports.

The cuts are only 10 percent of the anticipated $18 million in cuts WMU faces.
