The U.S. under-23 national team faces Mexico's under-23 national team Wednesday at Guadalajara's Estadio Tres de Marz at 9 p.m. ET.
The United States begins Olympic qualifying in November, entering the CONCACAF tournament in the second round against the winner of the St. Kitts & Nevis-Dominica first-round series. Mexico will host the final round of Olympic qualifying and is exempt from the knockout phase.
U.S. coach Glenn Myernick has called up 18 players, including 2002 World Cup stars Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley.
Donovan and Beasley are among 10 players from the U-20 team that played in the 2001 World Youth Championship in Myernick's squad. Ricardo Clark, the top rookie in the young MLS season, and Justin Mapp are Myernick's only selections from the U-17 team that played in the 2001 Under-17 World Cup. Mapp and David Testo were last-minute additions, replacing the injured Kyle Martino and Eddie Johnson.
Notable U-23 absentees are D.C. United starters Bobby Convey and Santino Quaranta. Other MLS starters from last weekend not making the trip are Mike Magee (MetroStars) and Brad Davis (Dallas Burn).
Mexico's national team coach, Ricardo Lavolpe, is in charge of Mexico's U-23 team, which includes two players who appeared in the Tri's 0-0 tie with the U.S. May 8 in Houston: midfielder Alberto Medina, forward Adolfo Bautista. Goalkeeper Jose de Jesus Corona and midfielder Eduardo Rergis were also on the roster for the Houston game but did not enter the match.
