Lindsay Tarpley netted her third goal of the tournament and the U.S. women's national team notched its third successive shutout Tuesday, dominating Canada, 2-0, to win the Four Nations tournament for the second year in a row.

Tarpley scored in the 13th minute and Joy Fawcett added an 81st-minute penalty kick and the Americans limited their northern neighbors to just two shots — neither on target — on a wet, chilly day in Shenzhen, China.

The United States went 2-0-1 in the event, outscoring its opposition, 5-0. Canada finished last with a 0-3-0 record.

China twice rallied to tie Sweden, 2-2, earning second place on Han Duan's 90th-minute rebound. The Chinese finished 1-0-2, and Sweden was 1-1-1.

''The thing I'm most pleased about is that we got better every game,'' U.S. coach April Heinrichs said. ''The American teams want to go forward, we attack aggressively, and sometimes we lack patience. During the course of this tournament, we showed great patience in picking and choosing the point of attack, and as a result we got behind Canada upwards of 20 times.

''If you can convert that statistic to chances on goal, you're going to win games consistently.''

Tarpley, captain of the U.S. under-19 team that won the world championship 17 months ago and Soccer America's 2003 College Women's Player of the Year, enjoyed an international coming-out party in China, scoring twice in a 3-0 opening romp over Sweden and adding a tournament-best third goal with a superb finish against the Canadians. The goals were her first three as a senior international.

The goal came from a throw-in, with Shannon MacMillan tossing the ball into the box for Tarpley, who let the ball skip past her while she stepped past Canadian defender Charmaine Hooper. Tarpley took control of the ball, darted toward the near post and fired through goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc's legs from 4 yards.

''The tournament was just a lot of fun,'' said Tarpley, positioned as an attacking midfielder in the Americans' 4-5-1 formation but provided the freedom to go where she pleased. ''To play these three teams was a great learning experience for all the young players. The veterans have been great in helping us get adjusted to this level, and it gives us confidence to know that we can help the team win in a tournament like this.''

Fawcett made it 2-0 near the end, after Marie-Eve Nault took down Abby Wambach in the box following an excellent long ball from Kate Markgraf.

The Americans switched to a 4-4-2 in the second half, after Wambach entered the game.

Siri Mullinix started in goal, and Heinrichs gave defenders Heather Mitts and Amy LePeilbet and midfielder Leslie Osborne their first senior starts. LePeilbet, making her second international appearance, teamed with Fawcett in the middle of the backline to defuse Canada's aerial attack.

''Amy LePeilbet's performance was outstanding,'' Heinrichs said. ''She was very strong in the air, won almost every ball and has great recovery speed.''

Fawcett, Markgraf and Kristine Lilly played all 360 minutes in the tournament.

The U.S. and Canadian women are preparing for the Feb. 25-March 5 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament in Costa Rica. Both squads are expected to earn berths for the Athens Olympics.

In the second game, Therese Sjogran's second goal of the tournament gave Sweden a 31st-minute lead, but Li Jie pulled China even seven minutes later on a penalty kick. Josefine Oqvist's breakaway goal put the Swedes ahead again in the 82nd minute, but Han's late strike split the points.
