FIFA, soccerÆs world governing body, on Saturday awarded the 2010 World Cup to South Africa.
''The winner is Africa,ö said FIFA President Sepp Blatter. ôThe winner is football.''
South Africa, which will become its continentÆs first World Cup host, was declared winner by receiving 14 votes after the first round of FIFA Executive Committee voting. Morocco received 10 votes, while Egypt did not receive any.
Before the vote, FIFA rejected a bid by Libya because it did not meet the criteria and Tunisia pulled its bid when FIFA rejected the option of it co-hosting with Libya.
The 2006 World Cup will take place in Germany.
