It wasn't glamourous, but Clint Mathis and Steve Cherundolo helped their club, Hannover 96, retain its place in Germany's First Division status with a 0-0 tie against Wolfsburg.

Two other Americans in Germany can help each other during a final week that will determine their fate for next season: Gregg Berhalter and Energie Cottbus need a victory to have a chance at promotion and face Jahn Regensberg, a team Conor Casey and Karlsruhe are hoping loses.

Karlsruhe hosts third-place Alemania Aachen, which Cottbus is trying to catch, in its last chance to avoid relegation and want Jahn Regensberg and Luebeck, to lose.

The English season came to a close on a high note for several Americans, all of whose teams avoided relegation. Brian McBride scored twice in Fulham's 2-0 victory at Bolton, Claudio Reyna played well in Manchester City's 5-1 thrashing of Everton while Kasey Keller and Tim Howard posted shutouts.

Elsewhere, defender Charles Kazlauskas scored his first goal in the Dutch Second Division and Daniel Hernandez was eliminated along with Necaxa from playoff contention in Mexico.
