Diana Niland, who guided Missouri-Rolla to a 13-36-6 record in three years as head coach, took charge of Troy State's women's soccer program when preseason camps opened in mid-August.
Niland, who previously served as an assistant coach at Arkansas State and head coach at Bowling Green (Ky.) High School, guided Division II Missouri-Rolla to an 8-9-3 record last season. She replaces John Garvilla, who was hired as athletic director at Belhaven College in Jackson, Miss.
Troy State this fall will play its final season in the Atlantic Sun Conference, then move next year to the Sun Belt Conference.
Other hires include:
* At independent South Carolina State, Amy Olson — formerly an assistant at Southwestern Athletic Conference school Prairie View A&M — has been brought on as head women's soccer and golf coach. Olson, who played at Howard, replaces Sonia King, who started the program in 1999.
* Centenary promoted assistant coach Chase Wooten to head coach after Jed Jones resigned. Wooten, a goalkeeper for Centenary's men's team in 1995-97, was keepers coach at Alabama in 2002 following four seasons as boys and girls soccer coach at Caddo Magnet High School in Shreveport, La.
* Alabama State, which has announced its intention to play this season in the SWAC, has not announced a head coach. Phone calls to ASU athletic department and sports information officials weren't returned.
