Winners
DaMARCUS BEASLEY. After coming off the bench in PSV Eindhoven's two previous Dutch League games and sitting out last week's Champions League game, the American winger started against FC Groningen on Saturday and scored the second goal of a 3-0 win. Beasley scored his second league goal of the season after beating defender Kurt Elshot down the left wing. PSV is in first place with a three-point lead over its nearest rivals.
ANDY HERRON, Chicago's Costa Rican striker who was signed in mid-season, celebrated his second straight two-goal game in his second start. In the Fire's 3-3 tie with Columbus, Herron erased a 2-1 deficit with a 19-yard rocket that curved into the far corner and made it 3-3 by, with his back to goal, sombrero-ing defender Robin Fraser before tapping the ball past keeper Jon Busch.
KRISTINE LILLY, in a 5-0 friendly win over New Zealand on Sunday before 16,554 fans in Portland, scored her 100th U.S. national team goal. Lilly joins four other players in the 100 club – teammate Mia Hamm, who scored twice against New Zealand to up her total to 156, Italian Elisabetta Vignotto (107), American Michelle Akers (105) and Italian Carolina Morace (104).
DUKE's men's team upped its record to 11-0-0 with a 3-2 win over North Carolina before 6,350 fans in Durham. Owoicho Adogwa scored twice for the Blue Devils and Danny Kramer scored the winner with a minute left – the last of four goals in the game's final 18 minutes.
Losers
The DALLAS BURN remains last in the Western Conference after falling, 2-0, to Eastern Conference cellar team New England on goals by Taylor Twellman and Steve Ralston. Dallas has lost four of its last five games.
SASHA VICTORINE. Los Angeles was headed to a 1-0 win over Kansas City in front of 27,000 home fans with less than two minutes left. Then Wizard Josh Wolff hit a low pass across the goalmouth that Victorine heeled into his team's goal. The 1-1 tie, in which CARLOS RUIZ failed to convert a penalty kick and COBI JONES missed a couple of chances, means Los Angeles has won just once in its last 11 outings.
CLINT MATHIS was left off the roster for Hannover's 3-1 win at Hansa Rostock. Mathis had scored his first goal of the season last week in Hannover's first win but celebrated by lashing out at his coach Ewald Lienen for not giving him more playing time. American Steve Cherundolo played the full 90 as Hannover catapulted from 17th place (second-to-last) to 10th place.
RONNIE EKELUND saw his penalty kick saved by Joe Cannon in San Jose's 1-1 tie with Colorado. Cannon had fouled Landon Donovan but referee RICARDO SALAZAR did not eject the keeper even though he had denied Donovan an obivious scoring opportunity.
