It was a good weekend for underdogs. After the MLS All-Stars beat Chelsea, Chivas of Guadalajara held Barcelona to a 1-1 tie in front of 92,650 at the Coliseum in Los Angeles. The highly anticipated match between Copa Libertadores semifinalists and the European champions set two records: it was the largest crowd ever to watch a club match in the United States and the largest-ever soccer crowd at the Coliseum. Chivas actually had to split its team in two, as the club also had a Mexican league game scheduled that day, which it lost, 1-0, to Toluca. At the end of that match, Coach Jose Manuel de la Torre flew from Mexico to Los Angeles to coach the second half of the exhibition against Barcelona. Both coaches were satisfied with the result but complained of the condition of the field. MLS Commissioner Don Garber was outraged. “I’m furious about the field,” Garber said. “It’s an embarrassment to the city of Los Angeles. It’s disrespectful to the teams we have brought here and to the progress the sport has made in this country.” It seems everyone was in agreement about the pitch. “Obviously, the field wasn’t in great condition,” said Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard, “but that’s what was available. Thankfully, we didn’t suffer any injuries.” As for Chivas and Mexico forward Omar Bravo, “I would have preferred to play in Toluca today.”
