Hernan Crespo signed with Inter Milan after Chelsea allowed the unhappy Argentine striker move on a free transfer. Inter announced via its Web site that Crespo signed a two-year deal, although Chelsea still has the option to take him back next year. Officially, it’s a loan deal that will effectively see Crespo to the end of his contract with the Stamford Bridge club. It never really worked out between Crespo and Chelsea, who signed him from Inter for $28 million in 2003; he was also loaned out to Inter’s cross-town rival AC Milan for the 2004-2005 season and was reluctantly forced to return to London last year. Crespo recently achieved Italian citizenship, which is a plus for Inter, because he will no longer count as a non-EU player on the squad’s quota. The arrival at Inter of a talismanic striker like Crespo means it is less likely Inter will sign Fiorentina striker Luca Toni, who is a similar sort of player. Meanwhile, both Inter and AC Milan are battling for the signature of Juventus striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic who requested a transfer. Last week, Ibra refused to play in a preseason friendly for Juve and has threatened legal action if the club does not let him leave. Juve still insists he is going nowhere.
