Following the disingenuous affair that was Fiorentina owner Diego Della Valle’s “change of heart” press conference with star striker Luca Toni yesterday, Inter owner Massimo Moratti issued an apology to Toni, whom he had been pursuing for several weeks until the deal finally broke apart yesterday. Moratti blamed his poor relations with Della Valle as the reason the negotiations fell through. “I considered it a difficult operation, mainly because I had to find an agreement with a person who has always been against me,” said Moratti. “In the end we chose to follow another road, I am sorry for Toni but we had no other choice.” The other road, apparently, is Hernan Crespo, who Nerazzurri landed on a free transfer from Chelsea. “Now we want to enjoy the arrival of Crespo, who is a player we love,” Moratti said, adding that he doesn’t necessarily expect any more arrivals or departures before the start of the season. However, the club just had a fresh offer rejected for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Juve’s talented Swedish striker, but negotiations for the unhappy player’s signature are expected to continue. Meanwhile, Inter’s Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins looks certain to leave, possibly for England, while other reports say Manchester United is preparing to bid a whopping $80 million for Inter’s Brazilian striker Adriano. If any of deals were to move through then Inter would almost certainly have to add another striker.
