Winners:

Eddie Gaven scored twice and Amado Guevara struck once as the struggling METROSTARS won, 3-0, at Chicago. REAL SALT LAKE also notched its second win of the season as Jason Kreis' record 95th regular-season goal provided the winner in a 2-1 victory over Los Angeles.

EDDIE LEWIS made a quicker than expected recovery from appendix surgery and played 89 minutes as Preston downed Derby, 2-0, in the first leg of their semifinal series in the playoff for promotion to the Premier League.

BRIAN McBRIDE scored twice, giving him six goals for the 2004-05 English Premier League season, as Fulham trounced Norwich, 6-0. Carlos Bocanegra saw his first action for Fulham since April 3.

Borussia Moenchengladbach, with American KASEY KELLER in goal, posted its fourth straight shutout with a 0-0 tie against Hertha Berlin. The result makes Gladbach safe from relegation with one game left.

BARCELONA clinched its first Spanish La Liga title in six years with a 1-1 tie at Levante, prompting an estimated 900,000 to take to Barcelona's streets in celebration. About 100,000 attended a reception party for the players at the Camp Nou stadium.

FRANCE, coached by Eric Cantona, beat Portugal on a penalty-kick tiebreaker in the final of the Beach Soccer World Cup in Rio de Janeiro after playing to 3-3 tie.

Losers:

After their last two games produced 13 goals, New England and D.C. UNITED gave lackluster performances in a 1-0 New England win that drops defending champ United to 2-3-2 and second-to-last in the Eastern Conference.

The COLUMBUS CREW's 4-0 loss to Kansas City marked the Crew's fourth straight loss, a streak during which it has conceded 11 goals and scored once.

MANCHESTER CITY, with Claudio Reyna making his 10th straight start, could only muster a 1-1 tie with Middlesbrough at home when a win would have given it a UEFA Cup spot. In a bizarre ending to the game, Man City coach Stuart Pearce moved keeper David James to center forward and Robbie Fowler  failed to convert a stoppage-time penalty kick.
