Eddie Johnson's goal in the last minute of the first half was enough to give the United States a 1-0 victory over Honduras Saturday in an international friendly at University Stadium in Albuquerque, N.M.

The game was the teamÆs final tune-up matches for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers on March 27 against Mexico in Mexico City and March 30 against Guatemala in Birmingham, Ala.

U.S. head coach Bruce Arena became the first coach in U.S. national team history to reach the 100-game plateau, improving his all-time record to 55-23-22.

The win extended the USAÆs team-record unbeaten run to 16 games. Johnson has now scored seven goals in six career games since making his debut back on Oct. 9, 2004. For the USA, their last lost came more than a year ago and the team is now 11-0-5 in their last 16 games.

On the goal, Clint Mathis of Major League SoccerÆs Real Salt Lake, struck a shot from 35 yards out that beat Honduras goalkeeper Junior Morales and careened off the crossbar. The shot rebounded into the middle of the box where Johnson slammed home the gameÆs only goal.

JohnsonÆs current goal pace is unrivaled in the 90-year history of the U.S MenÆs National Team, as he is the only player to score as many six goals in his first seven matches.

QUOTABLE

''I thought on the whole that our team played well. Our young group in the back defended well, [and] held Honduras to one shot on goal that I saw and then the one at the end that could have tied the game. Our team played well for 90 minutes, and if there is criticism of our team today was we did not do well with our chances. It was a game where perhaps we could score three or four goals and win comfortably. Because we didnÆt do well with our chances, we kept Honduras in the game until the last kick.''

— U.S. coach Bruce Arena

''[Eddie Johnson] has to do a better job holding the ball in tough games in the right situations. He has to do a better job holding off defenders. He could do better with his chances, he had a few good chances today. That's the easy criticism when you sit on the bench and watch. Eddie could tell he had a chance or two for another goal today. Brian Ching could tell you the same thing. But thatÆs why when they pay players, they have to pay the guys who score goals a lot more than guys who donÆt. That' all part of it. For a young kid, heÆs scored goals. You canÆt complain about that. HeÆs got a big learning curve ahead.''

— U.S. coach Bruce Arena
