Mauricio Solis, a regular on the Costa Rican national team and a veteran of the English Premier League, has been acquired by the San Jose Clash. “Mauricio Solis will be a wonderful addition to our squad,” San Jose GM Lynne Meterparel said. “All four of our international spots are now filled, and with Mauirico, Ronald Cerritos, Raul Diaz Arce and Mauricio Wright, we have four high-level players.” Solis, 26, who has played alongside the Clash’s Wright with the Costa Rican national team, spent the 1997-98 season with Derby County in the English Premier League. The 5-foot-8, 155-pound midfielder joins the Clash after leading Comunicaciones to the championship this season in the Guatemalan First Division. “Mauricio is a player we’ve been interested in for some time now, and we’re excited that the deal is done,” Clash Director of Soccer Renato Capobianco said. “You don’t get a chance to play in England unless you’re a quality player.” Born Dec. 13, 1972, Solis burst onto the Costa Rican soccer scene at the age of 18, with the club team Herediano in 1991. A year later, he led Herediano to the Costa Rican First Division championship, and he became a regular on the Costa Rican national team, where he has made more than 40 appearances. He played six seasons with Herediano before he was signed by Derby County. “Mauricio is a creative playmaker, but he’s also the kind of player who is willing to go back and win the ball in the midfield or drop into defense,” said San Jose coach Brian Quinn. “He gives us a lot more options in the midfield.” Solis will join the Clash upon receipt of his visa, “hopefully within the next week to 10 days,” Capobianco said. Solis could make his home debut July 4, when the Clash plays D.C. United at Stanford Stadium in the second half of a doubleheader that starts with a Women’s World Cup semifinal game.
