Winners:

CLINT DEMPSEY, the midfielder who has playing upfront in place of injured Pat Noonan, opened the scoring for New England with his first strike since June 22 and his seventh this season as the Revs thumped Real Salt Lake, 4-1. Taylor Twellman scored his 10th goal in the win.

JOSH WOLFF scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season to lead Kansas City to a 3-2 comeback win over Chicago, whose Brazilian attacker, Thiago, scored and assisted in the game's first six minutes.

Good thing for the LOS ANGELES GALAXY that MLS expanded by two teams in 2005. In its last 15 MLS games, the Galaxy's only wins have come with three victories over Chivas USA, including Wednesday night's 1-0 win, and a win over Real Salt Lake. On Wednesday, a crowd of 88,816 attended what was a Chivas USA home game at the Los Angeles Coliseum and featured a doubleheader in which CLUB AMERICA downed Chivas Guadalajara, 2-1.

Americans BOBBY CONVEY and MARCUS HAHNEMANN helped English second-tier Reading even its record to 1-1 with a 2-0 midweek win at Brighton & Hove Albion. It was the second consecutive start for Convey, who had been out of favor for the last half of the 2004-05 season.

Losers:

MetroStars' playmaker AMADO GUEVARA once again let his temper trounce his talent in Wednesday's 3-0 loss to D.C. United. His retaliatory foul led to the United free kick that set up the first goal and he was cautioned for protesting the obvious call. Then he clattered blind-side into Ben Olsen to get thrown out in the 45th minute. After the game, Guevara, who recently signed a long-term contract, said he would leave MLS at the end of the season because of the refereeing.

AJAX AMSTERDAM's opening game of the 2005-06 Dutch Eredivisie season will not take place this weekend because Amsterdam mayor Job Cohen said his police force could not handle the security requirements. The game will probably be played behind-closed doors in a secret location, possibly in Germany.
