MANCHESTER UNITED notched its first win in an official competition since the $1.47 billion Glazer takeover with a 3-0 win over Hungarian champion Debrecen in a first-leg, third round Champions League qualifier. Old Trafford was 16,000 seats short of capacity because of an anti-Glazer fan boycott. Malcolm Glazer's sons, who are running the club, celebrated with players in the locker room. American keeper Tim Howard was on the bench as offseason acquisition Edwin Van der Sar got the start in goal.

Losers:

MLS has suspended Real Salt Lake attacker CLINT MATHIS for two games and fined him $4,750 on top of the one-game suspension and $250 fine he received for his red card in last Saturday's win over Chivas USA. MLS described Mathis' transgressions as "striking at an opponent in the face, failure to leave the field promptly after being ejected, verbally confronting the referee, kicking a soccer ball into the stands, and inappropriate physical confrontation with [Isaac] Romo prior to the leaving the field." The incident started after Romo kicked a ball at the fallen Mathis following a foul by Antonio Martinez. Ejected Chivas USA defender Esteban Arias received one additional game suspension and an extra $500 fine.

Sparta Rotterdam forward RACHID BOUAOUZAN, 21, has been handed a six-month jail sentence suspended for two years and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service for breaking the leg of Go Ahead Eagles player Niels Kokmeijer last December. The injury may have ended Kokmeijer's career. Bouaouzan was also banned by the Dutch soccer federation for 12 games.

FANS OF GENOA overturned cars, set fire to trash bins and threw stones, bottles and other objects at police in a riot sparked by the Italian soccer federation's upholding of Genoa's relegation from Italy's Serie A to the third division for game-fixing.
