It was a good debut for Bruce Arena, whose NY Red Bulls handed the best team in MLS its first shutout of the season in an otherwise dull 0-0 draw. Not too bad, considering D.C. United leads the league in scoring with 38 goals in 22 games. It was Arena’s first MLS game since October 25, 1998, when he coached D.C. United to a loss against Chicago in the MLS Cup. The result changes little in the Eastern conference standings; D.C. still holds an 18-point lead over second place New England. The Red Bulls, meanwhile, have moved into a tie for third with the Kansas City Wizards and the Chicago Fire. Said Arena “I think our guys played a pretty good game,” he said. “Good concentration. Good movement as a team. Created some chances.” Asked what he learned, Arena said, “They can compete in the league. We’re not one of the premier teams in the league. We know that. We’re going to get better.”
