Chris Handsor's hat trick, including the gamewinner with 36.7 seconds to play, lifted the Philadelphia Kixx past the Milwaukee Wave in Friday night's decisive match of the Major Indoor Soccer League championship series. The Kixx's 8-6 triumph before 16,802 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee gave it two victories in the best-of-three series, snapping the Wave's 30-game home winning streak and denying its host a third successive MISL crown. Philadelphia, which lost in last year's final to Milwaukee, fell in the April 26 opener in Milwaukee, 11-4, but won the second game, 11-4, at home last Saturday. Kixx goalkeeper Peter Pappas made 18 saves, seven in the third quarter, to prevent the Wave from pulling away after halftime. Glenn Carbonara fired Milwaukee ahead, 6-4, with a goal, worth two points, with 4:28 remaining in the fourth quarter. Joel Shanker got the equalizer 18 seconds later to set the scene for Handsor's finale. Milwaukee netminder Victor Nogueira, the MISL Goalkeeper of the Year, stopped 14 shots. Handsor was selected the series MVP. Milwaukee had the best regular-season record in the six-team league, going 34-10 (22-0 at home). The Kixx finished second at 30-14. The Kansas City Comets (24-20) were third, followed by the Baltimore Blast (18-26), Cleveland Crunch (16-28) and Harrisburg Heat (10-34). The Wave topped Baltimore, 18-12, in a one-game semifinal on April 19; Philadelphia beat Kansas City, 18-13, in the other semifinal the same evening. Milwaukee coach Keith Tozer, indoor soccer's winningest coach with 502 regular-season victories, claimed the MISL/NPSL top-coach award for the fourth time. Baltimore's Sean Bowers was selected top defender for the third time. Baltimore's Billy Nelson was voted Rookie of the Year from a class that featured former MLS players Jake Dancy, Justin Evans and Johnny Torres. Evans and Torres were named to the All-Rookie team. Kansas City's Dino Delevski won the scoring title with 210 points (based on 3-, 2- and 1-point goals, plus assists) in 43 games. The All-MISL Teams will be announced on Tuesday and the league MVP will be announced on Thursday. MISL ALL-ROOKIE TEAM: GK — Brian Bowes (Kansas City); D — Billy Nelson (Baltimore), Marco Reda (Cleveland); M — Johnny Torres (Milwaukee), Jason Webb (Harrisburg); F — Justin Evans (Cleveland).
