Jeb Burbott Upland, Calif. I watched Kasey Keller and his Rayo V. side play Celta V. on ESPN-2 Monday (delayed) and, from that result, they sit atop their [Spanish] league table alone. I realize that it is inconceivable for them to actually win the League championship, but I wonder if you know if any just-promoted club has ever won a major European league title in that first year up? Ridge Mahoney: It happened just two years ago, Jeb, but has rarely occurred. Kaiserslautern, Bundesliga champion in 1991, shockingly was relegated during the 1995-96 season. Not only did the Red Devils go right back up by winning the Second Division the following season, but they rolled to the Bundesliga title in their first season (1997-98) back in the top flight. Nottingham Forest won the English First Division title in 1978, a year after they’d barely won promotion by finishing third in the Second Division. Not only that, but Forest went on to win the European Cup the following season. Incredible. Leeds won the First Division in 1992, just two seasons after winning the Second Division title. Blackburn, champions in 1995, won the crown in their third year after promotion, and have since, of course, gone back down. I don’t believe a promoted team has ever won the title in either Spain or Italy.
