Chris Caron Wilmington, N.C. Why doesn’t the MLS build more Stadiums like the one in Columbus? If getting money is a problem why don’t they just go public and or sell seat licences like the NFL’s Panthers did to help finance their stadium. Ridge Mahoney: Chris, The “public” in most American cities couldn’t care less about MLS, which is a pauper compared to the multi-billion dollar machine that is the NFL. Cities will gladly cough up millions to lure an NFL team because the league generates huge revenues. MLS, right now, is a black hole into which money disappears. Cities like Denver and Los Angeles might give Philip Anschutz some help to build stadium, and a few seat licenses might be sold, but comparing MLS to the NFL is farcical. Demand for the MLS product is low, aside from strong followings in a few cities, so in the near future, the operator-investors, along with assistance from the league, will have fund most stadium expenses themselves. Men like Anschutz, Lamar Hunt, and Robert Kraft didn’t get rich by plunging $50 million into an enterprise without researching the possiblity of earning that money back.
