Since January of 1996, Soccer America Magazine editors have answered your questions as part of a weekly feature on this website. We are pleased to announce that we will now answer one of your questions every weekday. Today, Mike Woitalla answers: Which MLS player has been a champion every year since the league’s inception? Steve Duval Uxbridge, Mass. What is the name of the MLS player who has won three championships? Mike Woitalla: Jesse Marsch is the only player to own all three MLS championship rings. Marsch played his college ball for Bob Bradley at Princeton, and in MLS’s inaugural season of 1996 he was picked in the third round of the college draft by D.C. United, with whom Bradley had taken the assistant coaching position. Marsch played four games in his rookie year, and 11 in his second year at D.C. United. He did not see any playoff action. When Bradley took the helm at the expansion Chicago Fire in 1998, he traded for Marsch. During the Fire’s championship run, Marsch played in 29 regular-season games and five postseason games, including 90 minutes of the MLS Cup win over D.C. United. Marsch was featured in a Soccer America Magazine story in the Aug. 16, 1999 issue.
