The opening of the English and Dutch seasons are included in this week's compilation of Americans playing in foreign leagues.
Chile
* Jonny Walker (Universidad Catolica, D1) vs. Santiago Wanderers (2-2).
Started: 90 minutes. After Arturo Norambuena knotted the game for Catolica with a 75th minute penalty kick, Walker helped preserve the draw with a series of impressive saves in the 79th and 80th minutes. Santiago held the edge in shots in the game, played in cold, wet conditions. On Wednesday, Catolica defeated Union Espanola, 4-2, in a qualifying match for the newly-established Copa Sudamericana. This Wednesday, Catolica faces San Felipe in the quarterfinals of qualifying, which will determine the two Chilean clubs that play in the final 16-team competition. Brazilian clubs are not involved in this tournament, which replaces the Copa Mercosur.
England
* Claudio Reyna (Sunderland, PL) vs. Blackburn, 0-0.
Started: 90 minutes. Three of Reyna's free kicks were among the visitors' best chances in this game — an important road draw for Sunderland. Friedel handled an early set piece from Reyna, then saw another go just wide in the 10th minute and finally made a superb save on Reyna's 76th-minute bid. According to wire reports, Sunderland coach Peter Reid is starting the season under a critical eye because of the poor way the team finished last season, narrowly avoiding relegation. ''There is a minority who are not happy,'' Reid said. ''I can understand that, as you are not going to please all the people all of the time. I am doing my best, that is all I can do, and so are the players. If we stick together, we are a force, no doubt about that.''
* Brad Friedel (Blackburn, PL) vs. Sunderland, 0-0.
Started: 90 minutes. Blackburn reunited the once-feared duo of Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke — both formerly of Manchester United — yet was unable to reward its opening-day crowd of 27,122 at Ewood Park with a goal or a win. Friedel played well, turning away two Claudio Reyna free kicks and several other quality efforts.
* Kasey Keller (Tottenham, PL) vs. Everton, 2-2.
Started: 90 minutes. Keller started the season as a team's No. 1 goalkeeper for the first time in three years. Spurs gladly took the draw, as Everton held a clear advantage until its goalkeeper, Richard Wright, fumbled a low shot from Les Ferdinand for the tying goal. Keller had trouble dealing with Everton's curling corner kicks, but otherwise had a decent outing.
* Joe-Max Moore (Everton, PL) vs. Tottenham, 2-2.
DNP. Not listed as a substitute.
* Jovan Kirovski (Birmingham, PL) vs. Arsenal, 0-2.
DNP. Kirovski just got his work permit approved late this week, so he was not listed among the substitutes. Kirovski moved from First Division Crystal Palace up to the Premier League, following former Crystal Palace coach Steve Bruce, now in charge at Birmingham. Arsenal's French connection of Thierry Henry, Sylvain Wiltord and Patrick Vieira overpowered and outclassed visiting Birmingham.
* Eddie Lewis (Fulham, PL) vs. Bolton, 4-1.
DNP. Not listed as a substitute.
* Gregg Berhalter (Crystal Palace, D1) vs. Portsmouth, 2-3.
DNP. Not listed as a substitute.
France
* Oguchi Onyewu (Metz, D1) bye.
* Greg Vanney (Bastia, D1) vs. Monaco, 1-0.
DNP. Not listed as a substitute.
Germany
After two game days in the German First Division season of 2002-2003, only two clubs haven't picked up a point. They are newly promoted Hannover 96, where Steve Cherundolo plays right back, and Nuremberg, which has Tony Sanneh on its backline.
* Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96, D2) vs. 1860 Munich, 1-3.
Started: 90 minutes. A crowd of 42,123 watched Hannover's first First Division home game since 1989. Hannover misses the playmaking of Czech Jan Simak, who has moved to Bayer Leverkusen. Kicker Magazine rated Cherundolo a 4.0 (D) on backline that saw two players receive worse grades.
* Conor Casey (Hannover 96, D2) vs. 1860 Munich, 1-3.
DNP.
* Frank Hejduk (Bayer Leverkusen, D1) vs. Borussia Dortmund, 1-1.
DNP.
* Tony Sanneh (Nuremberg, D1) vs. Hansa Rostock, 0-2.
Started: 90 minutes. Sanneh moved from right back, where he started last week, to his preferred center-back spot. Sanneh was the best backline player for Nuremberg, according to Kicker Magazine, which rated him a 3.5 (C-).
* Cory Gibbs (St. Pauli, D2) vs. LR Ahlen, 1-4.
DNP.
* Mike Duhaney (Mainz, B2) bye.
* Grover Gibson (Mainz, B2) bye.
* Jacob Thomas (Braunschweig, B2) at Rot-Weiss Oberhausen, 0-2. Started: 62 minutes.
DNP. Not listed as a substitute.
Netherlands
* John O'Brien (Ajax, D1) vs. Utrecht, 3-1.
Started: 90 minutes. In its season opener, Ajax picked up where it left off last season, soundly defeating the team it beat in the Dutch Cup final. O'Brien again was a fixture at left back, where he played most of last season.
* Earnie Stewart (NAC Breda, D1) vs. Roda JC Kerkrade, 2-2.
