Los Angeles traded midfielder Daniel Hernandez to Tampa Bay for former Galaxy midfielder Jorge Salcedo. “We are excited to have Jorge back in Los Angeles,” Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid said. “He is a good passer of the ball, giving us someone who can play in a deeper part of midfield. Also, he is a versatile player who can play sweeper if we need it.” Salcedo, 26, appeared in 16 games for the Mutiny this season, recording one assist. He played in 15 games for Tampa Bay last season, scoring four goals and adding 14 assists. The Mutiny acquired Salcedo from Chicago on June 29, 1998. The 6-1, 175-pound midfielder has worn the uniforms of four different teams: L.A. (1996, present-), Columbus (1997), Chicago (1998) and Tampa Bay (1998-99). He played at UCLA under Schmid between 1990-94 and is two credits shy of his political science degree. As a member of the Galaxy’s 1997 Western Conference championship squad, Salcedo appeared in 29 games for L.A., tallying two goals and one assist. He has also appeared in six postseason games, including the club’s 3-2 overtime loss to D.C. United in the ’96 MLS Cup. He went to Columbus in ’97 as part of a three-team trade with Colorado. Hernandez appeared in 12 games for the Galaxy this season, going scoreless in 853 minutes. The 24-year-old SMU product played in 17 games in his rookie season last year, tallying one assist. “We are sad to lose a player of Daniel’s quality, but to receive a player of quality, you have to sometimes give up a player of quality,” Schmid said.
