University of Virginia striker Chris Albright has signed a Project-40 contract, joining MLS’ three-year old venture with the United States Soccer Federation as the 12th member of the Class of 1999. Although he was also courted by clubs overseas, Albright opted to remain in the U.S. “Today is an exciting day for the league,” said MLS Executive Vice President Ivan Gazidis. “Albright will be the shining light for young American players. He will perform at a high level in MLS for years to come.” Albright, who as a sophomore led the Cavaliers in scoring last season with 20 goals and 43 points, was a first-team all-America selection. His departure means that Virginia will return only five of 11 starters from its 1998 national quarterfinalist squad. “We’re probably losing this season’s college soccer player of the year,” said Virginia coach George Gelnovatch. “But we’re trying to do what’s best for the individual player.” A budding U.S. national team hopeful, Albright was part of Bruce Arena’s roster for the Americans’ 1-0 victory over Argentina on June 13. Although the talented striker did not play in the match, Albright has a promising future representing the United States. “The signing of Chris is very exciting for U.S. Soccer and MLS,” U.S. national team coach Bruce Arena said. “He has the potential to be a future star at both levels. Albright is a sign of the commitment we have to keeping talented American players at home.” Albright will be assigned to an MLS team on Friday at the MLS All-Star press conference and luncheon in San Diego.
