Major League Soccer’s Disciplinary Committee has suspended D.C. United midfielder Marco Etcheverry for unsportsmanlike play and abusive behavior following his send-off on June 16, 1999 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Etcheverry, shown the red card following his tackle on Leonel Alvarez in the 77th minute of the Burn’s 3-0 home win over D.C. United, is suspended for three regular-season MLS games and fined $2,000. The games for which Etcheverry is suspended are June 19 vs. Los Angeles (already played), June 26 vs. Kansas City and July 4 at San Jose. Gottardi out Tampa Bay Mutiny forward Jefferson Gottardi will miss up to two weeks after sustaining a second degree right ankle sprain in training on June 25. He will be out of the lineup as the Mutiny prepare to host the Los Angeles Galaxy June 27 at 1:00 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium. Gottardi, who is second on the team with four goals, also has one assist for nine points on the season, good for second on the club as well. Gottardi, in his first year with the Mutiny after playing for Bolivar in his native Bolivia, started the season’s first 11 matches, but has been on the bench for the last two and did not travel to San Jose June 12 in a 2-1 Mutiny shootout loss.
