U.S. star Mia Hamm won the first FIFA Women’s World of the Year award, edging Chinese star Sun Wen and fellow American Tiffeny Milbrett in voting by national team coaches from around the world. Hamm picked up 154 points in the 5-3-1 point system. Sun Wen had 79 points, and Milbrett picked up 47. All three played this past season in the WUSA. Ironically, only Milbrett, the WUSA MVP, had a good first year in the new pro league. Hamm and her Washington Freedom struggled; Sun, who played for runner-up Atlanta, rarely started.
