The following is a team-by-team preview of the 2001 MLS SuperDraft, which will be held Monday, Feb. 5 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Under each team is listed the number of draft picks and the position of those picks overall in the six-round, 72-selection draft. Since each team is limited to five “protected” players — either Project-40 or Youth International — who do not count against their roster or salary cap, we have also listed each team’s current non-rostered players. Senior Internationals, of which each team is permitted three, are also shown. BY WILL KUHNS CHICAGO Picks: 4 (23rd, 29th, 33rd, 71st overall) Non-roster players: 1 (DaMarcus Beasley) Senior Internationals: 3 (Hristo Stoitchkov, Peter Nowak, Sergi Daniv) Positional needs: Depth at forward is most pressing, followed by a stabilizing force in the back. Expect … the Fire to nose it’s way into the top 15 picks somehow, select a proven forward and remain fairly quiet the rest of the day. Quote: “Let’s face it, teams are still looking for players who can help their teams right now. So even though there is a slant toward the younger, protected players, nobody is going to let a guy slip through who they think can step in immediately.” –Bob Bradley COLORADO Picks: 5 (17th, 18th, 32nd, 41st, 65th overall) Non-roster players: 1 (Seth Trembly, Jason Bent) Senior Internationals: 2 (Junior Agogo, Henry Zambrano) Positional needs: With the losses of Joey DiGiamarino and Jorge Dely Valdes, the Rapids need wide midfielders and depth at forward. A playmaker is also needed. Expect … the playmaker to come via allocation and the two second-round picks to be ôsleepersö — players nobody else touted highly. A deal for a Mutiny player or two may still be possible. Quote: “One of the challenges of the 18-man roster is that even the best of the draftees will have a difficult fight for a spot ahead of them. There will be a premium on non-rostered players, which could be good news for the second round … I could use about five first-round picks, but the resources we have are not bad. We are thankful to have an allocation.” — Coach Tim Hankinson COLUMBUS Picks: 6 (3rd, 27th, 30th, 39th, 51st, 63rd overall) Non-roster players: 2 (Roland Aguilera, Mario Longo) Senior Internationals: 3 (Ansil Elcock, Mario Gori, John Wilmar Perez) Positional needs: Depth at forward, marking backs. Expect … the Crew to keep its high pick this year and use it on the best back it can find. Quote: “I don’t think we need to make that many big changes, but we do need to improve our overall level. … One benefit to the smaller roster size is that it makes the A-League teams better. They’re getting good college players that might otherwise be on the bench of an MLS team.” –Tom Fitzgerald D.C. UNITED Picks: 3 (26th, 50th, 62nd overall) Non-roster players: 4 (Convey, Micah Cooks, Sergio Salas, Jose Alegria) Senior Internationals: 3 (Jaime Moreno, Marco Etcheverry, Raul Diaz Arce) Positional needs: Another capable forward, wide midfielder. Expect … D.C. to make a big trade before draft day to get at least one first-round pick, possibly two. Everything hinges on Ben Olsen’s situation with Nottingham Forest. If he latches on full time with the English First Division club as anticipated, D.C. may decide a wide midfielder is more urgent than another forward. Quote: “Greg Simmonds was with us through our trip to El Salvador and the Champions Cup, so obviously he’s a player we’re interested in, but he’s probably going to be available to several teams before us.” — Thomas Rongen DALLAS Picks: 7 (5th, 7th, 19th, 25th, 43rd, 55th, 67th overall) Non-roster players: 1 (Angel Rivillo) Senior Internationals: 3 (Ariel Graziani, Lubos Kubik, Esmundo Rodriguez) Positional needs: Wide midfielders who can contribute immediately. Expect … the Burn to hold onto its picks and take a natural wide midfielder and a forward with the potential of converting to that position. One will likely be from the A-League. Quote: “The focus is a little different, since Chicago did not have a first-round pick, but in the end, you’re looking at the same players. … Our picks are pretty good; we’re in strong position.” — Coach Mike Jeffries, on changing teams so close to draft day. KANSAS CITY Picks: 8 (12th, 24th, 35th, 36th, 48th, 59th, 60th, 72nd overall) Non-roster players: 3 (Francisco Gomez, Michael Green, Peter Byaruhanga) Senior Internationals: 1 (Gary Glasgow) Positional needs: A forward who can fit with Roy Lassiter, depth in central defense, left-sided midfielder. Expect … the Wizards to make a move for an A-League forward with strong ball possession skills. Quote: “I think we’ll probably see more A-League guys taken this year and as time goes on, that trend will probably continue. I talk to coaches who want to know where their guy stands, but they have to be open to the possibility of going to the A-League first and not feel like it’s a demotion. If you do a little post-graduate work, it shows what kind of persistence you have.” — Bob Gansler LOS ANGELES Picks: 6 (9th, 11th, 22nd, 45th, 57th, 69th overall) Non-roster players: 1 (Marvin Quijano) Senior Internationals: 3 (Simon Elliott, Luis Hernandez, Sebastian Vorbe) Positional needs: Depth in the back, left midfield. Expect … the Galaxy to part with an established player for cap reasons and use both its first-round picks on non-rostered players. METROSTARS Picks: 5 (13th, 15th, 46th, 58th, 70th overall) Non-roster players: 0 Senior Internationals: 3 (Roy Myers, Adolfo Valencia, Alex Comas) Positional needs: The Metros most important need is non-roster players. Expect … the Metros to lower their salary cap with a pre-draft deal for picks. This year’s picks will be used at the position of whatever starter they lose for cap reasons. Also expect Zambrano to reveal some Latin American talent from the New York area in the later rounds. Quote: “We have a team that is a solid team, but we have no Project-40s or Youth Internationals. Our draft strategy will be geared toward getting those guys, padding our roster even if they don’t have an immediate impact.” — Octavio Zambrano MIAMI Picks: 7 (4th, 21st, 28th, 38th, 40th, 52nd, 64th overall) Non-roster players: 2 (Kyle Beckerman, Nick Rimando) Senior Internationals: 3 (Diego Serna, Welton, Andy Williams) Positional needs: Central defense, depth in midfield. Expect … the club to part any one of its foreign players — and perhaps move down in the first round — in order to get an established player Hudson wants. NEW ENGLAND Picks: 5 (42nd, 47th, 53rd, 54th, 66th overall) Non-roster players: 1 (Shaker Asad) Senior Internationals: 3 (Mauricio Ramos, Mauricio Wright, Leonel Alvarez) Positional needs: Depth in the back, goalkeeper, forward. Expect … the Revolution to inherit Miami’s second-round pick as compensation for Eric Wynalda and take one of the following goalkeepers with it: Henry Ring (South Carolina), David Clemente (UAB) or Chris Humphries (San Jose State). Quote: “We are in a peculiar situation here because we don’t have any real picks that can make a difference but we may have a possibility to move up in the draft or make some changes through trades, so we’ll see what happens.” — Fernando Clavijo SAN JOSE Picks: 11 (1st, 8th, 10th, 14th, 16th, 20th, 31st, 34th, 37th, 49th, 61st overall) Non-roster players: 1 (Scott Bower) Senior Internationals: 2 (Ronald Cerritos, Mauricio Solis) Positional needs: Coach and General Manager. Expect … a lot of traded picks if no coach is in place by draft day, slightly fewer if one is hired. There is no chance the Earthquakes will hold onto all of its top six picks. Quote: “This is the best possible opportunity to start fresh, but we need to make prudent decisions and utilize these picks wisely … Last year’s draft was a positive sign that you can find players who can clearly impact your team in the first round.” — Chris Chamides, director of soccer operations TAMPA BAY Picks: Tampa Bay 5 (2nd, 6th, 44th, 56th, 68th overall) Non-roster players: 0 Senior Internationals: 1 (Mamadou Diallo) Positional needs: Improved speed on the back line, left side of midfield and a complimentary scoring threat to “Big Mama.” Expect … Alfonso Mondelo, who is more familiar with the young crop of Project-40s than any other MLS coach, to use at least one of his first two picks on a player under 20 years old. Quote: “I would definitely like to strengthen the left side of the field. I would also like to get another scoring threat to go with Diallo, but I’m not sure we will be able to get that player right way with the No. 2 and No. 6 picks.” — Alfonso Mondelo
