The Los Angeles Galaxy has signed New Zealand international and former Stanford all-America midfielder Simon Elliot as its 1999 discovery player. A native of Wellington, New Zealand, Elliot will fill the Galaxy’s fourth and final foreign player slot, which was vacated after the team released Ecuadoran midfielder Jaime Caicedo. Elliot has played 36 times for New Zealand, and was recently named to the country’s 22-player roster for the 1999 Confederations Cup. Elliot spent the past two years playing for Stanford, where he helped lead the Cardinal to the 1998 NCAA final. He recently played with the A-League’s Boston Bulldogs. “We are very happy to add Simon to our roster,” said Los Angeles coach Sigi Schmid. “He is very good with either foot and can play anywhere in the midfield. He is not a typical player coming out of college, having gained plenty of international experience with the New Zealand national team.” Elliot joined the Galaxy over the weekend and made his MLS debut as a sub in Los Angeles’ 1-0 win over New England.
