Former U.S. national team and D.C. United captain John Harkes has elected to join the New England Revolution and is expected to join the team when it resumes training in Boston on Monday, March 22. The Revolution acquired Harkes from D.C. United on February 2nd in exchange for the Revolution’s first and second round collegiate picks in the 2000 draft. Harkes had recently been playing for English Premier League team Nottingham Forest. His loan to Nottingham Forest expired on March 15th. “I have made my decision to join the Revolution,” Harkes said. “I have enjoyed my return to the Premiership, but I want to be part of the excitement going on in New England. I have always loved playing at Foxboro in front of their fans. Now I can play for them.” “We are very pleased with John’s decision,” Revolution GM Brian O’Donovan said. “We knew there was a risk that John might have stayed in England, but we always believed he would be playing for us or we would not have made the trade in the first place.” Player/coach Walter Zenga is happy to have Harkes in the fold. “John is a winner and we need players like him on our team,” Zenga said. “He is a major piece of our puzzle to build a team capable of reaching the MLS Cup Final at Foxboro on November 21st.” The Revolution opens its season on Sunday, March 28th at the Miami Fusion.
