Dario Brose, a veteran of the United States national team who has been playing in Europe for the past seven seasons, will join the San Jose Clash after signing with Major League Soccer on March 17. “Dario is a creative midfielder who will help solidify the central midfield,” Clash GM Lynne Meterparel said. “He adds stability and international experience to the middle of our team.” Brose, 29, has spent the past four seasons with F.C. Saarbruecken in Germany. “In Dario Brose we’ve acquired another good player, a national-team caliber midfielder,” said San Jose coach Brian Quinn. “He’s a creative midfielder who controls the ball, passes with vision and also has a hard, accurate shot.” Meterparel said she was impressed with Brose’s commitment to San Jose. “He wants to be part of what we’re doing here, building the Clash into San Jose’s ‘hometown team,'” she said. “I’ve been considering coming home to play in MLS for a couple of years, and I’m excited to be going to San Jose,” Brose said by telephone before leaving Germany. “The Clash was my first choice, and San Jose has always been the place where I wanted to play.” A two-time All-America selection at North Carolina State, Brose starred for the United States in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, scoring a world-class goal in a 3-1 victory over Kuwait. He went on to play three seasons with St. Brieuc in France, helping the team earn promotion to the French Second Division in 1993, before going to Germany. “I’ve been watching Dario since he played in the Olympics, and I’ve always been impressed with him,” said Clash Director of Soccer Renato Capobianco. Brose made his U.S. national team debut in January 1994, in a 2-1 victory over Norway in Tempe, Arizona. He has four appearances and one goal, in a 4-1 loss to Peru in Lima in October 1996, scoring off an assist from the Clash’s Eddie Lewis. Brose is scheduled to arrive in San Jose late Thursday afternoon and train with the Clash for the first time Friday. The playmaking midfielder could be available Saturday when the Clash opens its season against the defending MLS champion Chicago Fire at Spartan Stadium.
