Arsenal may now concentrate on soccer. The club was at the forefront of yesterday’s hectic transfer deadline, as the perennially delayed sagas involving Ashley Cole and Jose Antonio Reyes still lacked conclusion. However, both players finally got their wish, ending weeks of confusion for both the players and the clubs. Cole moved to Arsenal for $9 million plus William Gallas, while Jose Reyes finally got his move to Real Madrid in exchange for Julio Baptista. “The positive thing is that it’s over,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said Friday. “We’ve done what we wanted to do and it’s up to us to prove that we’ve done the right things.” Wenger later revealed that he had already promised Cole he could go, prior to yesterday’s hectic finish. “I did not use [play] Ashley Cole, because he could not help us to achieve our targets,” he told reporters. “I promised him that he could go, so I never counted on him.” Wenger also said he bared no animosity towards the player for his decision to move, but he didn’t want the player to go until Arsenal received an acceptable fee, which was ultimately Gallas plus $9.5 million. Baptista, who rejected the chance to move to Arsenal last year in favor of Real Madrid, was sent to Arsenal in a loan exchange for winger Jose Reyes. The exchange includes an option to make the move permanent. Wenger said he would use the versatile Baptista as a striker or hanging offensive midfielder. “We’ve brought two more players in who can help us,” said Wenger. “We’ve done more than enough in the transfer market.”
