Aaron Lopez scored with a volley off Ryan Futagaki's free kick with one minute left to give UCLA 1-0 win over Pac-10 rival Stanford in the NCAA Division I men 's final Sunday afternoon in Dallas.
The win was the Bruins' third 1-0 victory over Stanford this season. UCLA had beaten Stanford twice in the regular season en route to the Pac-10 title. The first game was decided on Jimmy Frazelle's overtime goal. Cliff McKinley's goal in the 77th minute was the difference in the second game.
Both teams had great chances in the first half. Taylor Graham's header was cleared off the line by Frazelle in the sixth minute. Later in the first half, Futagaki, a member of the U.S. team that played in the 1999 World Youth Championship, hit the post with a shot from outside the area.
The victory gave the Bruins a national title in their first season under Tom Fitzgerald. They had won their three previous titles under Sigi Schmid (1985, 1991 and 1997).
